The Precious project consists of 5 partners within the UK and includes companies from various points along the supply chain. With the large potential for AM in the jewellery industry, customer needs will grow increasingly more complex as the technology is adopted. The partners expertise in jewellery design, production, software development, additive manufacturing, polishing/finishing operations cover many aspects of the supply chain where challenges must be addressed before AM can be adopted. The partners, working in close cooperation, will benefit the jewellery manufacturing industry by helping to overcome current challenges, demonstrating the possibilities of the AM technology and stimulating economic growth in the sector.

In recent years it has successfully expanded into new areas, such as the aerospace, medical, dental and jewellery sector. Wherever possible Delcam seeks applications which require strong links between CAD, CAI and CAM as this plays to the technical strength of the company. Delcam is keen to progress in the emerging Additive Manufacturing market and due to its aforementioned expansion in the jewellery sector due to customer demands. Delcam is, among others, focussing on the combination of design freedom and manufacturing possibilities enabled by Additive Manufacturing. The Precious project provides an excellent opportunity to, jointly, develop and demonstrate an integrated software suite to design jewellery products with a focus on a solution that provides minimum support structures to manufacture as efficient as possible with precious materials.

Cookson Precious Metals (CPM)

Cookson Precious Metals (CPM) is a leading supplier of fabricated precious metals in Europe. Gold, silver, platinum and palladium alloys manufactured into wire, sheet, tubing, powders, and casting grain are all supplied. CPM is also a major precious metals refiner with London Bullion Market Association good delivery status. CPM has dedicated significant resources to develop additive manufacturing technology as an offering to the jewellery sector including a joint development project with EOS to design laser sintering machinery specifically for precious metals. Once PRECIOUS metal additive manufacturing is fully developed, its design freedom, flexibility, and efficient use of material will appeal to jewellery designers and manufacturers. The Precious project provides a great opportunity to work with other industry partners to continue development of solutions to address surface quality, post processing, and other remaining additive manufacturing issues.

Future Factories/Lionel Dean is the studio of product designer Dr Lionel T Dean. It is a practice focused exclusively on direct digital manufacturing and explores the added design value that can be embodied within consumer products using these technologies. The studio’s projects examine product personalisation and customisation including the concept of mass individualisation which developed from Dr Dean’s PhD. These individualised design responses are achieved using generative and computational design strategies that combine computer aided design (CAD) with computer scripting. The Precious project aligns with the future expansion of our activities.

The Jewellery Industry Innovation Centre (JIIC-BCU) is part of The School of Jewellery within the faculty of Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD), at Birmingham City University (BCU) BIAD is one of the UK‟s leading design focused research faculties that is also extensively engaged in applied research and knowledge transfer with industry. The JIIC has specific expertise in design, product development, computer aided design (CAD), computer aided manufacture (CAM), Rapid Prototyping (RP), rapid manufacturing (RM), additive manufacturing (AM) computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining, laser welding, laser marking and laser scanning, and investment casting. They will bring many of these skill sets and much jewellery industry specific knowledge to the Precious project and greatly facilitate a unified and focused approach by the consortium partners.

Initially supplying the jewellery industry Finishing Techniques have expanded into many new market sectors such as aerospace, auto sport, automotive, pharmaceutical, dental and cutting tool manufacturers. Joining the Precious project will gives the opportunity to research, develop, demonstrate and provide the cost effective polishing solutions for jewellery products designed using the laser sintering process.
